The Management of Diabetes in Pregnancy
Managing preexisting diabetes and gestational diabetes (GDM) during pregnancy presents a significant challenge to physicians, diabetes educators, and patients. Optimal care requires diligent attention to maternal glycemia, comorbid conditions, and patient self-management skills. In patients with preexisting diabetes, medical treatment and counseling must be provided during the preconception period so that patients can achieve the normal glycemic control needed to avoid poor fetal outcomes. Likewise, GDM must be identified promptly and lifestyle changes implemented to ensure good outcomes.
